It was time to do the scene, and Cary said, “George, why don’t we just go ahead? If you don’t like it, we’ll do it again.” So, without a rehearsal or anything, we started the scene. As I was talking, it hit me that I’d had too much to drink. So, as I explained things to Cary, I hiccuped. In answer to the hiccup, Cary said — out of the clear blue sky — “Excuse me.” Well, I sort of said, “Ummm?” It was very difficult for me to keep a straight face, because his ad-libbed response had been so beautifully done … Cary had an almost perfect humor.

Jimmy Stewart recites a part of Christopher Marlowe’s ‘Passionate Shepherd to His Love’ to Hedy Lamarr in Come Live With Me (1941).

This is lovely.  He’s lovely.

“An’ that’s the thing—that’s the great thing about the movies. After you learn—and if you’re good and Gawd helps ya and you’re lucky enough to have a personality that comes across—then what you’re doing is… you’re giving people little, tiny pieces of time… that they never forget.”

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she’d say, “In this world, Elwood, you must be” - she always called me Elwood - “In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.” Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

You Can’t Take It With You.

“Well it takes courage… everybody’s afraid to live.”

I just saw this movie and I’m a little smitten.  Such a lovely film.  More than lovely, it was inspiring. Lionel Barrymore was darling, and James Stewart… well this video is proof enough of how charming he is.  And to think, Tony Kirby (James Stewart): thinking about solar energy since 1938.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY James Maitland Stewart May 20, 1908 - July 2, 1997I came out here as a contract player at MGM, and I went to work every day. It might be a big part in a little picture, or a little part in a big picture. You learned your craft by working at it. You crawled before you walked. - James Stewart  If Bess and I had a son, we’d want him to be just like Jimmy Stewart. - President Harry S. Truman
