Limelight

I still have roughly 15 pages to write in the next 5-6 hours. This writing thing is hard. I’m in grad school. I ate so many chocolate-covered espresso beans that I think I’m gonna puke. And I still have to pack up my room. CHEERS.

Thought this could use another go-round.
No thievery intended, if it’s yours, let me know and I’ll credit it.
Movie Nerd Moment Of The Day: I get that Buster had his whole “no smiling” thing going on, and I get that it worked for him. He did it better than anyone else. It gave him an image, and when he does smile you can sense that image slipping until he begins to look less like a star protagonist and more like an extra, or a sidekick.
But oh, I do love seeing him smile. It’s like seeing a rainbow, or a unicorn. Probably made more lovely because of its rarity.

95 years ago today Buster Keaton made his screen debut in Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle’s short comedy ‘The Butcher Boy’.
Awww…..95 year ago, on this day. I read in an excerpt from his autobiography that he could still remember how that first hit with the flour bag felt. And between the flour, getting hit int he face, and getting covered in molasses, he hadn’t the slightest idea why he was giving up a full day’s work for this new movie ‘business’.
I think we’ll end Sunday night with what may be the most beautiful 9:50 minutes on the internet.
Right?? It really is remarkably lovely. It comes the closest to accurately illustrating why it is that I love him.

Buster Keaton Rides Again (1965)
Buster Keaton Rides Again is a 1965 documentary film about the filming of Buster Keaton’s film The Railrodder, which was also released in 1965. Although it is a production documentary, this film is actually longer than The Railrodder, which was only 24 minutes long.
This is so great! I didn’t think I had time for a 55 minute documentary, but it was worth it. Did you know that he got his nickname “Buster” when he was a baby, and it was given to him by Harry Houdini? And he played Bridge with the Marx brothers? And he once broke his own neck and didn’t realize it until he was diagnosed three months later?!
